The 1096B115 element is a self-contained, mechanical temperature regulator that requires no external power. It operates based on the "expanding wax" principle:

Cold Phase: When the fluid temperature is below 46°C, the wax is solid, the element is contracted, and the valve directs flow through the "bypass" line to help the engine warm up rapidly.

Hot Phase: Once the fluid reaches the 115°F (46°C) setpoint, the wax expands, pushing a piston that slides the valve gate. This redirects the fluid toward the heat exchanger (cooler) to maintain a stable operating temperature.

This is a critical "fit and forget" component. If the wax element fails or loses its calibration, the engine may overheat or fail to reach its optimal thermal efficiency, leading to potential damage or "High Temperature" trips on the control panel.
