This is a fundamental and highly critical sealing component positioned directly between the engine block and the cylinder head. Its primary function is to seal the combustion chamber, ensuring that expanding expanding gases do not escape and maximum compression is maintained. Simultaneously, it prevents engine coolant and lubricating oil from mixing together or leaking out.

Due to the immense firing pressures (peak cylinder pressures) and extreme temperatures generated by Type 4 gas engines, this gasket is subjected to punishing mechanical and thermal stress. Therefore, it is manufactured using multi-layered composite materials and metal fire rings. Because it undergoes such intense compression when installed, it is strictly a single-use item and must be replaced with a brand new one every time the cylinder head is removed for maintenance or an overhaul.
