Working in tandem with the valve, the seat ensures the hermetic sealing of the combustion chamber, which is crucial to prevent pressure loss during the compression and power strokes. Since the exiting exhaust gases reach critical temperatures and pressures, this component is subjected to enormous thermal and mechanical stress. For this reason, it is manufactured from special alloys that are highly resistant to wear and extreme heat.

Another of its vital functions is heat dissipation: it absorbs the extreme heat from the exhaust valve and transfers it into the cylinder head (which is water-cooled), preventing the valve itself from melting or warping.
