This is a precision-machined, cylindrical metal sleeve that is press-fitted directly into the cylinder head. Its primary purpose is to house the stem of the intake valve and perfectly guide its linear, up-and-down motion during every engine cycle.

By keeping the valve strictly on-axis, the valve guide ensures that the valve head strikes its mating seat (the B00306767 code we looked at previously) dead-center, guaranteeing a flawless gas seal. Beyond mechanical guidance, this part performs two other critical functions: it helps transfer heat from the valve stem into the cylinder head, and, combined with valve stem seals, it prevents lubricating oil from the rocker cover from leaking down into the air intake port. Due to the constant sliding friction, it is a wear item that is routinely inspected and replaced during cylinder head overhauls.
